Aging at Home or Aging in Place is becoming a viable solution for many seniors. Instead of selling there homes and moving into a retirement village or assisted living, a growing number are modifying there homes. It is important that your home is safe and secure and easy to move around in. Often times a redesign of your existing floor plan can be performed which will allow for widening a hallway or adding a ramp.

Remodeling your bathroom with a roll in shower (no curb), wall mounted seat and grab bars, in-addition to adding grab bars for stability, security and peace of mind, are just some of the ways to modify your home.

Aging at home should be considered a major decision. Start the decision process by listing the pros and cons of staying in your home and follow up with open discussions with friends and family.

If your decision is to stay in your home, find a qualified contractor who specializes in this area.

Deck replacement, the addition of a new screened-in porch, and front porches are three other top remodeling trends that are on the rise. Old fashioned front porches are making a big come-back! Why? They add charm, soften the approach to the house, and increase ‘curb appeal’ on any New England home. Also, studies show us that we are seeing a resurgence of urban living and people want to connect with their neighborhoods and be more social. Front porches are an easy and safe way to connect. The addition of a back- or wrap around- screened-in porch not only adds to the functional living space of your home in the summer, but gives you a pleasant relief from the bugs on those perfect summer evenings. Also, decking materials now come in many options of composites and colors choices and still offer the natural look of wood. Many of these options include guarantees of over 20 years, saving the home owner money in the long-term on wear-and-tear and replacement costs. For most of us, means we can install it and forget it! What trends are you seeing?

Based on a recent study by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry, home owners are not starting major remodeling project but they are spending their time and money on smaller projects. Mercer Home Solutions, a local remodeler from the Northboro / Shrewsbury area, is seeing the same trend here in the Metrowest Area as well.

With the huge shift in the real-estate market over the last few years, home owners are no longer trying to ‘just’ increase the value of their home with home improvement and remodeling projects. They are more interested in improving the quality of their life, the live-able space, and how ‘comfortable’ it is for the family to stay at home and live in the house. “The majority of requests that we receive for new projects, these days, are for bathroom renovations. Not just one bathroom, either, but two bathrooms being renovated in one house at the same time”. What’s included in a bathroom remodel? Depending on the client’s budget and vision. “We are doing everything from a simple face lift, by replacing a vanity, counter top and a sink, to a complete tear out of an existing bathroom and rebuilding it with custom showers, soaking tubs, custom vanities and top of the line fixtures. What are you seeing for trends?
